| 内容記述 | Background: Recently, there has been an increasing need for psychiatric treatment and care services in psychiatric wards in Japan. However, there is a shortage of care services in psychiatric wards, which poses a great problem Purpose: To affirm the willingness of nurses to work in psychiatric wards and the difficulties they face in caring for patients with mental illnesses. Method: A comparative investigation was conducted wherein questionnaires were administered to nurses working in psychiatric wards(denoted by “psychiatric,” n = 1,340) and to those working in other wards (denoted by other, n = 533). Results: The results indicated that the nurses working in the “psychiatric group were more hesitant in their willingness to work in terms of' ”income, lack of career growth,” and preconceived notions of other persons as compared to the nurses from the “other group. On the other hand, the nurses in the “other” group hesitated more in terms or “wanting to gain experience in the psychiatric ward, making use of one's experience to work, and no confidence in communicating with patients. In each ward, 95% of the nurses faced difficulties while caring for patients with mental illnesses. Nurses in the “other group faced a high proportion of“risk of accidents, “difficulty in comprehending a patient's behavior and intention, and “lengthy conversations. These items are related to caring for patients. The nurses in the “psychiatric” group account for a significantly high proportion of two items, “railing and assaulting medical staff” and “difficulty in accepting a discharge from institutions.” | |||||||||||||||||||||
