The development of medical care during the Boxer Rebellion （C．1900-1901） was studied using a military report, "Jinba Eisei Gyoumu", about medical service. In the present study, we noticed the introduction of x-rays. In addition, medical care and nursing was provided to injured foreign soldiers by staff of the Japan Red Cross. We compared details of sicknesses and injuries, the numbers of patients, their treatment, and nursing conditions with those of the Sino-Japanese War. From these comparisons, we find that the remission rate was generally higher than that of the Sino-Japanese War. The use of X-ray for diagnosis was found to make surgery more effective. In fact, there was no case of limb amputation in the Hiroshima Yobi-Byoin during the war. On the other hand, there was no improvement in the treatment, or the prevention of beriberi resulting from eating polished rice supplied by the military authorities. The Japan Red Cross established a system that enabled relief squads to be dispatched all over Japan. Japan was internationally admired for accepting and treating injured foreign soldiers. However, nursing for Japanese soldiers was less than satisfying and there are no descriptions in the relief reports on improvement of nursing conditions. |
