The participants were first-year nursing students tasked with writing reports on supportive relationships before and after clinical practice. The study was motivated by the question, “What constitutes supportive relationships?” The reports were analyzed through contextual analysis. The supportive relationships that students perceived both before and after clinical practice included: “Problem-solving process,” “Involvement that promotes patient self-care,” “Supporting patients to face treatment,” “Involvement of nurses who have acquired communication skills,” and “The mutual relationship between patients and nurses.” “Improving nurse’s abilities” and “Self-attitude and behavior for relationship building” were identified only before clinical practice. Meanwhile, “Collaboration with other professionals” and “Self-reflection and finding problems” were identified only after clinical practice.
