内容記述 | The purpose of this study is to clarify the traditional view of the mind-body and technique of Budo based on The Mysterious Technique of the Cat. The Mysterious Technique of the Cat was written in 1727 by Niwa Jurozaemon Tadaaki (丹波十郎左衛門忠明) who was well acquainted with swordsmanship and had made an extensive study of Zen Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. It is also considered an important example of martial arts literature. This study adopts the following procedures. First, it reviews what The Mysterious Technique of the Cat(猫之妙術) is, such as the author, the plot, and the philosophical background of the work. Next, it compares The Mysterious Technique of the Cat and The Wooden Gamecock(木鶏) of Chuang Tzu that influenced The Mysterious Technique of the Cat. Finally, the traditional view of the mind-body and technique of Budo is clarified. The Mysterious Technique of the Cat presents Budo in three stages: the stage of technique(技), the stage of Ch'i(気) and the stage of mind(心) on Eastern philosophy, such as Confucianism and Zen Buddhism. The state of mind is presented as the ultimate secret of martial arts and as a Way(道) for Budo to pursue. Here, Ji (technique, skill, body) and Ri (principle, mind, spirit) are just like the two wheels of a cart. Furthermore, it quotes Mushin(無心), The Way(道), The Doctrine of the Mean(中庸), seeing into one's own nature to present the stage of mind. In other words, the ultimate goal of martial arts is the realm of enlightenment. It also tells Budo practitioners to become gentlemen(君子). A gentleman is not a person who strives for victory in competition or honor in Dan, the rank of Budo. In conclusion, the Mysterious Technique of the Cat is considered to be an essential textbook to understand what the traditional view of the mind-body and technique of Budo is. | |||||||||
